Materials You’ll Need to Create Universal Cuffs

1. Duct tape: Duct tape is readily available and known for its strength and versatility. Pick any color for personalized universal cuffs.

2. Double sided hook and loop tape: This reusable, double-sided fastener adheres to itself and provides adjustable closure. The 3/4” width option works well for most hands. We recommend using the soft side against the skin and cutting sharp corners as needed.

Step-by-Step Guide for Duct Tape Universal Cuffs

1. Measure and cut

Begin by measuring the circumference of the knuckles, then add an additional 6-7”. Cut a strip of duct tape to the length you calculated. In my case, I took 7” for the circumference of my knuckles plus 6” to cut a strip of duct tape 13” long. Your measurements may vary depending on how snug you need the cuff to fit and how deep your cuff pocket needs to be. You may want to err on the side of adding extra length that you can cut back later.

2. Fold the strip of duct tape onto itself, lengthwise

3. Wrap the strip around the hand and mark the cuff width

Wrap the duct tape strip around the hand, with the two ends joining near the smallest finger. Mark the strip near the smallest finger joint with a pen or marker. This will indicate the width of your your cuff. Aim for a snug fit that you can still easily slide onto and off of the hand.

4. Gather the ends and measure the tail

Gather the two ends together, forming a tail. Measure the tail from your mark to the end of the tail.

5. Tape the tail end

This tail end will become the cuff pocket. Cut a piece of duct tape to the length you just obtained (in this case 3”) and then secure the two tail ends together, starting at your mark to the end of the tail.

6. Fold the tail onto the cuff, forming the cuff pocket

Fold the tail onto the cuff, forming the start of the cuff pocket. This pocket will hold the object of your choice.

7. Create two cuff pocket securement strips

Cut two small strips of duct tape long enough to wrap around the cuff pocket. The length will depend on the size of the item to be held within your cuff pocket. Fold these two strips lengthwise onto themselves like you did in step 2.

8. Tape the two cuff pocket securement straps- Part 1

Tape two 1” wide strips of duct tape over the cuff pocket securement straps and onto the cuff pocket.

9. Wrap the two securement straps around the cuff pocket

Wrap the two cuff pocket securement straps all the way around the cuff pocket to prepare for the final step.

10. Tape the two cuff pocket securement straps- Part 2

The last step is to finish taping the cuff pocket securement straps onto the cuff pocket. Again, you’ll need two 1” wide strips of duct tape.

Optional Cuff Don/Doff Assist Loop

Some people with decreased hand function may want an extra loop to help them slide the cuff on and off independently. We call his “don” (to put on) and “doff” (to take off). Form a loop to the desired length using the fold over technique shown in step two. Then tape it onto the top of the cuff.

Experiment With Different Uses For Your Cuff

As an example, try flipping your cuff around to use it as a pen or pencil holder.

Eating Utensil Adjustments

Many people with reduced hand function have trouble scooping or spearing their food with a universal cuff. You can either bend the utensil down or purchase a device called a right-angle utensil pocket for your cuff.

Step-by-Step Guide for Universal Cuffs Made Out of Double Sided Hook and Loop Tape 

1. Cut your double sided hook and loop pieces

• The longest piece should equal the circumference of the knuckle joints plus 3-4”

• The cuff pocket piece for utensils, pens, etc. should be about 3” long.

• The last two securement pieces should be 2 1/2 to 3” each, depending on the item you’ll be holding.

• You may need to adjust measurements per individual needs.

• Round corners as desired to prevent skin scratches.

2. Wrap the longest piece around the hand for a snug, yet comfortable fit

3. Start to form the cuff pocket

Near the smallest finger, attach one of the pieces halfway, forming the beginning of the cuff pocket.

4. Secure the cuff pocket

Place the desired item into the cuff pocket for reference, then finish the pocket by wrapping another small piece around.

5. Wrap the last piece around the object

Wrap the last small piece around the cuff and the object to be held, lining up near the bottom of the index finger as a reference point.
